Agriculture: Building Your First Water Irrigation System

Are you thinking of starting an agriculture business? Do you love growing crops and suddenly you want to make a living out of it? Well, there are several steps to take before you can begin an agriculture business in the Philippines such as renting land, choosing the seasoned crops to plant, hiring a few workers for help and having your water irrigation system. These are just a tip of an iceberg, managing an agriculture business requires time, effort and energy but hey you can go a long way if you have the right people and tools/machines accessible.

What is a Water Irrigation System?

Irrigation is the artificial application of water to the soil through various systems of tubes, pumps, and sprays. Irrigation is usually used in areas where rainfall is irregular or dry times of drought is expected. There are many types of irrigation systems, in which water is supplied to the entire field uniformly.

Parts of an Irrigation System

  • Water Timer - Irrigation timers program your sprinklers or hoses to water at regular intervals. You can change them according to season, weather, and so on, and they’ll water your lawn automatically, ensuring that you never leave your lawn high and dry.

  • Control Valves - These control the fluids in your facility with maximum guarantees of reliability and quality.

  • PVC Pipes & Fittings -According to PVC Fittings Online, both Schedule 40 and Schedule 80 pipes are common types of irrigation PVC pipes. They handle pressure roughly the same, so you won't have to worry about more frequent breaks if you opt for Schedule 40. Schedule 80 pipe has thicker walls and is subsequently more structurally sound, so you might want to go with Schedule 80 pipe if you are building an above-ground system.

  • Sprinkler Head - A device used to irrigate crops, lawns, landscapes, golf courses, and other areas. They are also used for cooling and the control of airborne dust.

  • Filters - The filters are essential elements to avoid obstructions in irrigation systems, whether a ring, mesh or perforated cylinder.

  • Drippers - The most critical segments in the drip irrigation system. The function of all drippers is to control the flow of water from the inner, pressurized side of the pipe into the atmospheric pressure outside the pipe.

Good luck in setting up your Drip Irrigation system. Hopefully, this information will help you build it like a Pro! Covid-19 Essential Products

A year ago, the global pandemic started with the first case of covid-19 in Wuhan, China. As the day goes by, the number of people being infected increases until one day, we had our first case here in the Philippines. It's not yet alarming but in a short time, positive cases turned from ten thousand to a hundred thousand which brought fear to many people. Lockdown and quarantine were implemented, many were left jobless. It’s challenging to survive everyday expenses and travel to work until this year, vaccines were developed by medicines manufacturers around the world. We were so lucky and full of hope that these vaccines will help us get through these difficult times. However, we never have to be so sure, rest easy and be confident. We still need to follow the safety rules imposed by the government and always keep our covid-19 essentials product with us all the time.

1. Alcohol

We had a shortage in supply of alcohol from different brands from 1 gallon to even the smallest 60 ml of alcohol were out of stock everywhere. Thankfully that was only for a little while and we have survived the low supply. It is highly recommended to use alcohol after touching surfaces like doorknobs, handrails and simply just anything we think is being used by other people. The ideal alcohol to use has a 70% solution like the Greencross Isopropyl Alcohol. This alcohol is for disinfection, sterilization, body massage, relief of prickly heat and insect bites, hygienic purposes or general antiseptic. For use in hospital and sick room or everyday hygiene.

2. Hand Sanitizer / Dispenser

Another great alternative for alcohol is hand sanitizer. You also need to look for hand sanitizer with an alcohol content of at least 70% for it to be more effective in killing bacteria. We would like to recommend a hand sanitizer from one of the most popular brands in manufacturing personal protective equipment - 3M.

3M Hand Sanitizer contains moisturizing glycerin and is an antimicrobial liquid that contains 80 percent ethyl alcohol (crafted to the FDA Monograph) to help reduce the number of germs on hands, and glycerin to help keep skin hydrated. It dries quickly, leaving clean freshness behind. Hand sanitizer in gel, foam, or liquid form contains agents to kill bacteria and germs that may cause illness. It can be rubbed onto hands when access to soap and water is not available.

3. Face masks

A wide range of face masks made from different materials was being offered across the Philippines. Among the most popular are copper masks, n95 masks, surgical, cloth and also reusable respirators. According to DOH, Copper Face Mask can help effectively block off droplets coming from nasal and oral discharge from sneezing, coughing, singing or talking of an infected individual, thereby increasing the user’s protection from catching the virus from this primary (droplets) mode of transmission.

N95 face masks, on the other hand, provides 95% filtration capacity which helps the user have the protection he/she needs from people sneezing and coughing nearby. 3M N95 face masks were found to be the most best-selling NIOSH approved masks in the world.

If n95 face masks seem to be a bit pricey for you, one great alternative is 3-ply disposable surgical face masks. It has high filtration capacity and complies with the YY / T 0969-2013 disposable protection mask standard. Just make sure you throw them to the right places after each usage.

DIY face masks became so popular nowadays because it is so difficult to go out to buy and even risky to have something delivered to your front door. So many mommies and great sewers thought of creating cloth face masks. You can find a few blogs out there with the how-to guide.

4. Face Shield / Eye Goggles

Most of the time, we are not allowed to go inside an establishment without wearing a face shield because it is considered as one of the safety procedures. If you are looking for a study and comfortable face protection, you can opt for MSA Headgear with a clear visor. It can fully cover your face unlike the other widely available face shield in the market. You can also use eye goggles like 3M Virtua Protective Eyewear to help avoid touching your eyes and face. It is an economy line of safety glasses that offer style, protection, and affordability. Providing a wide viewing area, the wraparound design combines with the integrated side shields to help keep eyes protected.

5. Gloves

To avoid bringing the bacteria home with your family after going grocery shopping, it is best to use Disposable Gloves. These gloves are an excellent fit for comfort sensitivity and safety, high anti-tear properties, beaded cuff for tear resistance, ambidextrous and powder-free latex gloves.

Aside from wearing and using these COVID-19 essential products, make sure you also practice social distancing and proper hygiene at home and in public. Hope this article helps you and keep safe! DIY Plumbing: Sprinkler System Installation

Garden is usually a part of every residential house. This is where we can grow healthy grass, flowers
and crops. In order to keep these plants healthy, watering them daily could be highly required. A busy
homeowner who has a business to run and a family to spend time with isn’t always available to do this.
Good thing, a sprinkler system can be installed in your yard and with just a flip on the switch voila!
Watering your plants is now made automatic.

Curious about how you can install a sprinkler for your garden? Here is a short DIY guide you can follow
if you are ready to spend the time and effort in digging the ground and connecting PVC pipes.

1. Plan the Sprinkler System
Ask the utility company to mark the location of the cables buried in your yard. Get the actual size
measurements of your garden using a tape measure. Determine the best place to install the sprinkler
covering your target areas. Plot the locations of a sprinkler head in your plan and put marks where
they go in your yard. Print your plan or put the details in a clean paper and use as a guide.

2. Examine the Water Line
The quickest way to get the water running to your sprinkler system is by connecting it to a spigot. A
professional will tap into the main water supply line. Either way requires the installation of the
anti-siphon valve to prevent salty water and lawn chemicals from entering the main water line.

3. Dig a Trench
Dig 6 to 7 inches below the ground making sure the sides of the hole is at a 45-degree angle. When
digging a trench, put the sod and soil on different sides to prevent mixing and also for easier patching.
A trenching device may be rented at a home improvement store near your area to speed up this step.

4. Time to Install the Valve Manifold
Dig a hole in the ground similar to the size of the manifold. Place the box in the ground and attach one
end to the main water line. Make sure the clamps are tightened up to secure it in place.

5. Connect the PVC Pipes
Connect a ¾ inch PVC pipe to the one end of the manifold. Continue running the pipe along the main
trench. It's highly recommended to use “tee” connectors for pipes away from the main water line. At
the marks where you want the sprinkler head to be, attach risers using 90-degree connectors. Be sure
to apply adhesive and sealants appropriately when connecting sections together.

6. Install the Sprinkler Heads
Flush the water through the system to remove debris before installing the sprinkler heads to the risers.
Level the sprinkler heads with the soil. Fill in the trenches with the soil and sod.

7. Install the Sprinkler System Controller
One last thing and you’re done! Set up the time and frequencies you want the system to turn on. Install
the controller according to the manufacturer's specifications. Check the sprinkler system if working
properly. Check sprinkler heads periodically.

We hope this DIY guide has helped you do the sprinkler installation the correct way. If we have missed
an important step in this process, make sure you let us know by adding a comment below. For those
